Avani Lekhara

19-year-old Avani Lekhara won the gold medal in women’s 10m air rifle Standing event in the SH 1 category at the Tokyo Paralympics. In 2012, the whole Lekhara family met with an accident on their way to Dholpur from Jaipur. The then 11-year-old Avani suffered a spinal cord injury and was paralysed below the waist. Her father was posted as ADM at Dholpur at that time and they were travelling from Jaipur to Dholpur when their car skidded and turned turtle. While all of them including her mother Shweta and younger brother Arnav were injured, Avani suffered spinal cord injuries and was paralysed from the waist down.

In Tokyo on Monday, Avani fired a round of 621.7 in qualification after a shaky start but recovered to be placed seventh after the qualification round and make the final. In the final, she led from the start and edged out China’s Zhang C and Ukraine’s I Shchetnik in the medal series to win the gold.

Sumit Antil

Sumit Antil, the 23 year old, Javelin thrower from Sonipat, was born into a middle-class family and his father was a JWO officer in the Air Force and passed away in 2004. He was training to be a wrestler before an unfortunate motorbike accident changed his life. On January 5, 2015, when he was coming back from tuition, he met with an accident. As his father was in the Air Force, he was shifted to Army Hospital where doctors had to amputate his leg below the knee.

After a rest of 53 days, he was shifted to Artificial Limb Center in Pune. Post getting a prosthetic leg, he left his dream of becoming a wrestler but kept on practicing normal workouts. Antil had competed in the able-bodied javelin at the national level, including at the 2021 Indian Grand Prix event in Patiala, India.
