An IVF pregnancy signifies years of determination, resilience, and hope for couples. But when a baby comes through IVF into their world, there are many questions that come across their mind. One of them is “Will I be able to breastfeed my baby after IVF?”

It is one of the most common concerns of mothers but it should be answered with reassurance rather than leaving them distressed.

Through World Breastfeeding Week 2026, it becomes important to differentiate myths from the medical facts and make sure that women who conceive through assisted reproductive technology receive the support and confidence they deserve.

As per World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 48% of infants under six months are exclusively breastfed globally, with a target of increasing this figure to 60% by 2030. There is no doubt that the awareness around breastfeeding has improved in the past few years but there are still a lot of concerns around breastfeeding after IVF that are not addressed openly.

Does IVF Affect Breastfeeding?

The simple answer to this question is a clear NO.

IVF doesn’t affect the production of milk by the mother. The milk production is affected by the similar hormonal changes that occur after childbirth during pregnancy no matter whether the child is conceived either naturally or through fertility treatment.

But there are certain conditions that affect the breastfeeding journey of the women who conceive using IVF. If the woman undergoing IVF has experienced the following conditions, it may affect her breastfeeding journey:

  • Undergone a Caesarean delivery
  • Experiencing conditions such as hypertension, gestational diabetes, or thyroid disorders
  • A twin pregnancy
  • Older in age

These factors demand additional lactation support and may delay the in starting breastfeeding but they do not prevent successful breastfeeding. The early intervention and right guidance allows IVF mothers to breastfeed successfully.

Why Are More Mothers Choosing Exclusive Pumping?

There is an increasing trend where mothers are choosing exclusive pumping instead of direct breastfeeding. The breast milk is stored using a breast pump. It is then fed to the baby using a bottle. There are many factors that are responsible for this emerging trend. Modern women have shared caregiving responsibilities or they may have to return early to their work. If a baby is admitted to neonatal intensive care units, then exclusive pumping is also required in this case.

There is also a common question that fills the mind of many IVF mothers. It is: Does pumped breast milk have the same nutrients as direct breastfeeding?

The answer is that breast milk remains breast milk from a nutritional perspective. It continues to provide essential nutrients, healthy fats, proteins, and antibodies that supports a baby’s immune system and growth. On the other hand, direct breastfeeding offers benefits such as hormonal stimulation and skin to skin contact that assists in baby and mother bonding and maintains continuous milk supply. But we should not view direct breastfeeding and exclusive pumping as competing choices. It should be considered as different ways of ensuring that the baby receives the advantages of human milk.

Preparing for Breastfeeding Should Begin During Pregnancy

It is one of the big issues of a motherhood journey that consulting around breastfeeding is given only after the delivery in maternal healthcare. While the counselling and preparation should start much before the baby is conceived. It is very important to counsel a mother beforehand to build confidence, identify potential challenges and make the mothers prepared for the journey before the baby comes into their world.

At Seeds of Innocence IVF, we make sure that the breastfeeding counselling remains an inherent part of our maternal healthcare because we want to make sure that we are helping the couple not only through the IVF journey but even after completing their parenthood journey. We believe that equal support should be provided during early parenthood and childbirth. Our patients constantly tell us how their anxiety has been reduced once we prepared them for their breastfeeding journey beforehand. It gives them new confidence and assists them in navigating through the process.

Every Breastfeeding Journey Is Different

There is not one right way to act upon the whole process. It is one of the greatest misconceptions that this remains the same for every IVF couple. There are many babies that start breastfeeding immediately after birth. But there are other babies that may need expressed milk because of latching difficulties, medical complications, and premature delivery. A few mothers combine pumping with direct breastfeeding to balance family responsibilities and the work. All of these choices don’t make a mother less careful for the baby’s wellness.

The main focus should be around making sure that the mothers receive the practical support, emotional assurance and medical advice to eliminate any sort of unnecessary guilt or unrealistic expectations during their breastfeeding journey.

This World Breastfeeding Week 2026, we should make sure that the way a baby receives the breast milk doesn’t signify the success of breastfeeding. It should be defined by the fact that mothers are empowered with compassionate care, timely support and the right information. No matter if the new journey begins naturally or through IVF, every single mother should experience confident breastfeeding and every single child deserves the healthiest possible start to life.
