While the T20 world cup is drawing attention all around, one name is hogging the limelight, and that is Sanju Samson. The Kerala star wicketkeeper batter has arrived in style with his impeccable consecutive smashing innings, playing an instrumental role in India’s entry in the finals to be played against New Zealand.

Born and raised humbly to a father who was a Police constable, Samson moved to Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala in his early teens after taking his first cricket lessons in Delhi. In Kerala, he created a stir on the junior cricket circuit with his elegant batting. His sound technique and natural ability to time the ball cleanly quickly set him apart from his peers. These performances earned him a place in India’s squad for the Under-19 Asia Cup in 2011. However, he struggled to make a significant impact during the tournament, and the underwhelming showing ultimately cost him a spot in India’s squad for the Under-19 World Cup the following year.
Few Indian cricketers have had their reputation shaped as strongly by the IPL as Sanju Samson. Long before he became a regular name in discussions around India’s white-ball squads, Samson had already established himself as a central figure for the Rajasthan Royals. Elegant at the crease and capable of breathtaking strokeplay, he quickly became one of the franchise’s most dependable batters, scoring over 3, 000 runs across his first eight seasons.

The Royals spotted his potential early, signing him at the IPL auction in 2013 when he was just 18. Apart from the two seasons when the franchise was suspended, Samson remained a constant presence in their line-up. His association with the team deepened in 2021 when he was appointed captain. Leading from the front, he launched his campaign in spectacular fashion, smashing 119 off 63 balls against the Punjab Kings in the tournament opener. The innings set the tone for a season in which he amassed 484 runs, including a string of consistent scores. Though his individual performances shone, team results often lagged behind until 2022, when the Royals finally surged to a runners-up finish, with Samson contributing another productive season of 458 runs.
Long before his IPL exploits, Samson had already begun to make waves in domestic cricket. Representing the Kerala cricket team, he made his first-class debut in the 2011–12 season and quickly drew attention for his dual skills as a wicketkeeper and stylish batter in the Ranji Trophy. The 2013–14 season proved particularly fruitful, as he amassed 530 runs at an average close to 60, including a memorable double century in his very first match of the campaign. Another productive season followed with 475 runs, and by 2015–16, at just 20 years old, Samson was entrusted with the captaincy of Kerala.
If his red-ball credentials highlighted his temperament, his white-ball brilliance captured the imagination. In October 2019, during the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Samson produced a stunning innings of 212 not out against Goa — at the time the highest individual score in the tournament’s history. It was a reminder of the explosive batting ability that had already made him such a prized asset in the IPL.

International cricket, however, came in fits and starts. Samson made his T20I debut for the India national cricket team in July 2015 against the Zimbabwe national cricket team in Harare, but the opportunities that followed were sporadic. Nearly four and a half years passed before his next appearance in the format. His ODI debut eventually arrived in 2021, though even then he had to wait for consistent chances. In a later series against the West Indies cricket team, he reminded observers of his composure and class with a well-crafted 54 in the second match.
Samson first met Charulatha Remesh, his wife now, at Mar Ivanios College in Thiruvananthapuram. This companionship soon blossomed into a relationship of lifetime. Samson married Charulatha in 2018. A pillar of support for the stylish cricketer, Charulatha is an entrepreneur and constantly shares her anecdotes through her social media platforms.

Through the ups and downs, Samson’s journey has been defined by flair, resilience, and the quiet confidence of a player whose talent has never been in doubt. Whether in domestic cricket, the IPL, or on the international stage, he continues to represent one of Indian cricket’s most intriguing and stylish batters.
